Cro-Magnon skeleton. Skeleton of a Cro-Magnon human found at the Dolni Vestonice site in the Czech Republic. Cro-Magnons were anatomically modern humans (Homo sapiens sapiens) that lived in Europe from about 50, 000 years ago. It is thought that they were the direct ancestors of modern humans. They are famed for their cave paintings, tools and ornaments, and many of their burials seem to be ceremonial.
