More information:

Crohn's disease. Coloured abdominal X-ray showing the terminal part of the ileum (orange), inflamed by Crohn's disease. Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of unknown cause. It mainly affects the small intestine, but the colon and anus may also be involved. The disease causes the intestinal lining to thicken and become ulcerated. This may lead to obstruction of the intestine, causing pain, diarrhoea and poor absorption of nutrients. The onset of Crohn's disease is often between the ages of 15 and 25. The condition may be treated with anti-inflammatory and corticosteroid drugs, or with surgery.
