Cromwell's Bridge, Lancaster UK in 2020. Cromwell's Bridge, Lancashire as it was in September 2000.This old packhorse bridge crosses the River Hodder near Hurst Green in the Ribble Valley. It was built c1561 by Sir Richard Shireburn of the Stonyhurst Estate (now Stonyhurst College). The bridge is named after Oliver Cromwell who marched the New Model Army from Gisburn over it to fight the Royalists at the Battle of Preston (Aug 1648). Though looking in ruins, it is possible to cross it via a footpath, though the bridge has no side walls to protect walkers from falling into the river Hodder.
