Cuba/Argentina: Ernesto 'Che' Guevara (14 June 1928 - 9 October 1967), commonly known as El Che or simply Che, Argentine Marxist revolutionary, physician, author, intellectual, guerrilla leader, diplomat and military theorist. Photo by Alberto Korda (14 September 1928 - 25 May 2001, public domain), 5 March 1960. While living in Mexico City, Guevara met Raúl and Fidel Castro, joined their 26th of July Movement, and sailed to Cuba aboard the yacht, Granma, with the intention of overthrowing U.S.-backed Cuban dictator Fulgencio Batista. Guevara soon rose to prominence among the insurgents.
