Govaert en Vanhoutte's d-hotel combines old and new in an extraordinary way. An old farmhouse arranged on three sides of a traditional courtyard, and an adjoining protected windmill from 1841, form the heart of the hotel. The architects have placed three raised shuttered concrete and glass volumes surrounding these, housing 34 bedrooms and 11 individually-designed suites and a spa. The bar, dining and breakfast rooms are in the restored farmhouse. The old and new buildings have no contact above ground: instead, a glass box in the courtyard shelters a tunnel which leads from the reception under the farm to re-emerge in the concrete volumes beyond. Design in diverse forms - art, nature, film and music - are reflected in the interiors, and a range of artists including Matali Crasset were employed to design individual suites.
