The bridge now only provides a high level pedestrian route over Jesmond Dene, as it has been deemed inadequate to carry modern day traffic. The cleverly designed steel structure, by Lord William Armstrong, has rocking shoes at the base of each of the columns, so that should any movement of the bridge foundations take place, as a result of subsidence due to old coal mining in the area, the bridge structure would not be effected.
