Defences in the Quatara Depression The Quatara Depression lies about about thirty miles South of El Alamein and forms a natural obstacle for an advancing army in that it is composed of soft sand, bogs and salt flats impassable to motorised transport. This salt lake in the Quatara Depression illustrates the almost impassable nature of the ground.
