Lake Alajuela is a man-made lake. It serves as water reservoir for the Panama Canal, feed by the rivers Pequení, Boquerón, Salamanca, La Puente, Indio, Piedras, San Cristóbal and Escandaloso. It is supposed the historical low levels are caused by the El Niño.
