Residual Discharges. — For the purpose ofstudying the residual charge it is advisable to experi-ment with a cable of sufficient capacity and with aninsulation which constitutes a dielectric of large absorb-ing power when the cable is immersed in water. Acable of high insulation resistance should be selected. Proceed as follows: Charge the cable with an electro-motive force of 50 to 100 volts for several hours. It willoften continue to absorb a charge for twenty-four hours.Discharge it through a low resistance by closing the keyfor a very short interval.
