Light micrograph of an embryonic knee joint. The joint cavity (top) is lined by a synovial membrane (left), a very vascularized connective tissue without epithelial covering. A meniscus is protruding into the joint cavity. To the left, the fibrous connective tissue is an articular ligament. On the bottom, the articular cartilage of an immature bone epiphysis is still in ossification stage.
