The food and drug administration of the Pudong New Area of Shanghai has confiscated 3 million yuan (US$468, 000) in illegally obtained earnings from US pharmaceutical giant Pfizer as well as slapping them with a 100, 000 yuan (US$15, 600) fine for paying promotion fees to four major pharmacies to promote Viagra in the country, according to China Industry and Commerce News, a paper run by the State Administration for Industry & Commerce, cited by Shanghais The Paper. In September 2004, Pfizer signed an exclusive sales contract with Sinopharm subsidiary Beijing-based China National Medicine Corporation, later signing an exclusive agency agreement under which Pfizer would sell all of its prescription Viagra to the company, which would then sell it on Pfizers behalf.From 2011-2013, Pfizer signed promotional agreements with the Shanghai branch of Sinopharm subsidiary GuoDa Drugstore, Shanghai Huashi Pharmacy Company, the Shanghai For Me Pharmacy chain and Shanghai Yanghetang Pharmaceutical Chain Management Company.
