--FILE--Cars pass by new residential apartment buildings along a nearly empty street in Kangbashi district, Ordos city, north Chinas Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, 16 December 2011. The city of Ordos in northern Chinas Inner Mongolia autonomous region has gone from being the richest city in China per capita to being one of the countrys 12 ghost towns, but its latest label is as a debt city after it has encountered similar debt problems as Detroit, the erstwhile automobile powerhouse in the United States which recently filed for bankruptcy, reports the Beijing-based China Times, not to be confused with our sister paper. Analysts speculate that Ordos has annual income of 80 billion yuan (US$13.1 billion), but debts of 300 billion yuan (US$49 billion). Dai Hongkui, deputy director of the Dongsheng District Finance Bureau in Ordos, denied the figure, however, saying that the citys debt is no higher than 100 billion yuan (US$16.3 million). Dongsheng is the citys economic and financial center. Meanwhile, Liu Jianxun, chief of the Ordos Finance Bureau, declined to comment, saying only that the bureau is still evaluating the amount according to the newest government auditing standard.
