Flying Officer Lloyd Allan Trigg(1914-1943), Royal New Zealand Air Force, as he appeared in the Illustrated London News, 1943. Trigg was the first airman engaged in operations against U-boats to be awarded the Victoria Cross. Trigg destroyed an German submarine at close range from his Liberator plane before it crashed into the sea, killing all on board. The feat would have gone unknown, had it not been for an enemy officer who spoke of Trigg's great courage in the face of certain death. Date: 1943
