Passing the token. When the Flying Scotsman left Sheffield Park Station it moved from a multi platformed station onto a northern bound single line. It could only travel on that line if carrying a specific token. At Horsted Keynes, another multi platformed station, he had to surrender the token and collect another token for the next stretch of single line. The surrendered token was then passed by the station platform staff to the train waiting to head south thus allowing him access to that stretch of line. Leaning out of the cab can be seen the driver's mate with the token to be surrendered in his left hand and his right hand raised to collect the new token for the kilted platform staff member.
