French Revolution. Flight to Varennes (20-21 June 1791). King Louis XVI (1754-1793) and his family were arrested at Varennes on 21 June 1791 as he tried to reach the Royalist stronghold of Montmédy. Back from Varennes the royal family was brought back to Paris on 25 June 1791, escorted by the National Guard and armed people. The royal family returning to Paris after their arrest in Varennes.
