Some Palestinians hurled stones towards the fence at the Israeli forces, who were firing live ammunition and tear gas at protesters injuring a number of them. Journalists covering the demonstration were also affected by the tear gas. The Israeli army permits Palestinian fishermen in the Gaza Strip to sail within a limited designated fishing zone decided by Israeli authorities. The maritime blockade is part of the general blockade that Israel has imposed on the coastal enclave since 2007, and which has ruined the economy of the already impoverished Gaza Strip and brought it on the brink of a humanitarian crisis
