Giant elliptical galaxy M87, composite image. M87 is located 60 million light years from Earth in the constellation Virgo. It is one of the largest and brightest known galaxies, containing several trillion stars; our own galaxy, the Milky Way, contains no more than 400 billion. This image was obtained by the Chandra X-ray Observatory (blue), Hubble Space Telescope (visible light, yellow), the National Radio Astronomy Observatory's Very Large Array (radio, red).
