RMMH4D7N–The massive trunk of a kapok tree (Ceiba pentandra) dwarfs three visitors to the Amazon jungle in Ecuador in South America. The remarkable kapok tree can grow more than 200 feet (61 meters) tall in the tropical rainforest. The wood of this deciduous tree is lightweight and porous and often used by the indigenous Amazonian peoples for making dugout canoes. Fluffy silky fibers from its numerous seed pods are used by the natives as stuffing for life jackets and bedding. Some kapok trees will live as long as 300 years in the wild.
