A record 590 registered swimmers, the highest number in many years, plus visitors, have fun at the annual New Year's Day swim, an open water swimming event which takes place at Haltern Lake in the town of Haltern, North Rhine Westphalia. Despite unpredictable weather with rain, many brave the run along the beach and into the cold lake in costumes to celebrate the new year in style. All proceeds of the event go to local charities.
