Frequently asked questions

What is a Compressed JPEG, and how can I restore the original file size?

When you download an image from Alamy, it will be a compressed JPEG, which makes it faster to download. To restore the original file size, you can open the image in photo editing software like Photoshop. Alternatively you can convert the file to a TIFF to view full size.

How can I check the file size of an image on Alamy?

You can check the size of your file on our Image page very easily. Our image pages have all the file size information you need to check if the file is suitable for your project. You can typically find information on resolution, dimensions, and size.

1. Chosen a price package? If you have chosen one of our price packages, you will automatically get the largest file size available.

2. What about the Rights-Managed (RM) License? When you buy an RM license, you will also automatically get the largest file size available.

3. Picked a Royalty-Free (RF) image? With an RF image, you can select the print size that fits your needs. The smaller the print size, the lower the cost. So, go for the image as per your need.

What if you have already downloaded the image?

If you've downloaded your image and need to check the size, you can do it easily with most photo editing software. On PhotoShop, just open the image file, then head to the Menu bar and select 'image' followed by 'image size...' to see all the details.

If you are still unsure about how to check the right image, we are here to help you find the right image that meets your needs. Just give us a shout.

Tips: Keep in mind that certain image types, like the ones from mobile phones and archive or editorial shots, will always have a smaller file size.

What file formats are available for images on Alamy?

We sell JPEG files in various sizes, dimensions, and resolutions for our stock images. The file format is defined by the photographer and may vary from image to image. We do not supply images in any other file types.

How to filter the images and videos by size and resolution?

Alamy has an easy way to filter images and videos if you have specific file size requirements to help you with your search for the perfect image or video clip. It's all about ensuring they meet the desired quality with just the right resolution and dimensions.

  1. Resolution (DPI): Think of this as the clarity you want for your image. This stands for "dots per inch" and indicates how much detail is included in every inch of the printed image. Great resolution means a crisper, cleaner image.

  2. Dimensions: This is about the size of your image when you print it out. Bigger dimensions mean a larger print but make sure to match the resolution accordingly to avoid any quality loss.

If you want to narrow down to your specific needs quickly, use our file size filter on our search page. This feature allows you to select a minimum size or resolution, filtering out lower-quality content from your search results.

How to resize an image?

We understand that you would want to resize images and videos which are otherwise perfect for your project, but the file size is just a little bit too small.

Not to worry! In such cases, you can upsize the image using photo editing software. Below are some points to keep in mind to avoid quality loss and save some time as well.

Key Points to Remember:

1. Limitations of Upsizing: There's a limit to how much you can enlarge an image before it loses quality.

2. Quality Check: If an image is upsized too much, you will notice a change in image quality. The image will appear pixelated and less sharp.

For detailed step-by-step instructions on how to upsize an image, check out our blog: How to resize an image

What are the limitations when upsizing an image using photo editing software?

If you upsize an image too much, you may notice a decrease in image quality, and the image may appear pixelated. Keep in mind that increasing the physical size of an image will result in a lower resolution.

How do I check the image size after downloading it?

You can check the image size in most photo editing software. In Photoshop, for example, open the image file and select 'Image' and 'Image Size...' to view its dimensions and resolution.

Are there specific file formats for video and vector files on Alamy?

Yes, video clips are available as photo-JPEG files, and vectors are available as EPS files. The size and format of these files are provided on the image page.

What is the difference between resolution, pixels per inch (PPI), and dots per inch (DPI)?

Resolution refers to the quality of an image. Resolution is measured in pixels per inch (PPI) for digital files or dots per inch (DPI) for printed documents. More pixels or dots result in a higher quality image. A low-resolution image has less detail and may appear blurry, while a high-resolution image has more detail.
