Henry Thomas de la Beche (1796-1855), British geologist. Famed for his humorous representations of early fossil finds and fellow geologists, he carried out pioneering work with Conybeare on prehistoric marine reptiles (ichthyosaurs and plesiosaurs). He drew 'Duria antiquior' ('of life in a more ancient Dorset') featuring reconstructions of Mary Anning's many fossil finds. He encouraged it being turned into a lithographic print by George Scharf and for it to be sold with the proceeds going directly to her. He also founded the Museum of Practical Geology. This artwork, by Thomas Herbert Maguire, was lithographed by Hanhart. It is part of the 'Portraits of the Honarary members of the Ipswich Museum' collection published in 1852.
