Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, American poet and teacher, c1880. Born in Portland, Maine, Longfellow (1807-1882) is popularly remembered today for his poem Paul Revere's Ride (1863) and his long narrative poems 'The Song of Hiawatha and The Courtship of Miles Standish (1858).
