Historical and folk costumes of Europe. Farmer from Klein-Bremen near Minden (Westphalia). The farmer's wife in the villages between Minden and Bückeburg wears her hair tied back in a simple bun, with a stiffly padded, black-clad, wide-cornered cap covering her hair completely. At the back of the cap is a bow made of a wide, black silk ribbon. A wide, pleated collar of white linen falls onto the shoulders. The bodice, which reaches to the short waist, is usually made of dark cloth or calico and trimmed with velvet or silk ribbon. The sleeves do not quite reach the elbow, allowing the shirt sleeves to show a little and the forearm to be free. The light blue stockings, embroidered on the instep with coloured, usually red, but sometimes white wool, are visible below the skirt. Very wide-cut, sturdy leather shoes, which just cover the toes at the front but have a low heel at the back, allow this embroidery to stand out fully.
