Apump capable of handling 300 cubic yardsof solid matter per hour almost staggersbelief, yet the International Company hadfour such pumps at work on the canal. In the excavation work, especially fordeep foundations, wells, and for caissons, vast amounts of gravel and sand had to betaken out. To expedite this work sandpumps were employed, the Nye newmodel high-pressure pump being the oneselected. These pumps were built by theNye Steam Pum
