In Jainism, a Tirthankar or Jina is a human who achieves enlightenment (perfect knowledge), through asceticism. S/he becomes a Jina (after totally conquering anger, pride, deceit, desire and other forms of human weakness. After achieving enlightenment, a Tirthankar shows others the path to enlightenment. His/her religious teachings form the Jain canons.
