Jan. 01, 1954 - London bound airliner blows up, 16 killed: A four engined Cloudmaster airliner, on a route from Beirut to London, crashed today on the outskirts of Rome. The airliner was preparing to land at Rome's Ciampino Airport. As the Cloudmaster headed for Ciampion, its two port engines caught fire. The plane was 60 ft. up when it exploded and blazing wreckage plunged to the ground in the Borgata Gardiani district. The main part landed on waste ground within 100ft.
