Jan 18, 2006; San Diego, CA, USA; In 1998, 12-year-old Stephanie Crowe was stabbed to death in her home in Escondido, California. Finding no signs of an intruder, police quickly focused their investigation on her brother, Michael, and two of his friends who were later arrested and charged after a confession which was later found to have been coerced by police. Shortly after the murder, police had also arrested mentally ill transient Richard Raymond Tuite whose blood-stained clothes were retained by the police but was released from custody. It as only later during the trial that Tuite's clothes were brought in for DNA testing and Michael's confession re-examined. In May 2002, Tuite was arrested and charged with Stephanie's murder and Michael was exonerated. FILE PHOTO: 8/13/98.
