Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923). The First-born Child (El primer hijo). 1890. Watercolour on paper. 48 x 65 cm. Joaquin Sorolla y Bastida was a Spanish painter of the late 19th and early 20th centuries best known for capturing the intense Mediterranean sunlight in his beach scenes. Born in the coastal city of Valencia, his first paintings depicted society portraits as well as historical and social realist scenes. He would later become internationally famous for the so-called Luminist style, a variant of Impressionism, in which he depicted his light-filled beach and water scenes painted in the open air.
