Jul 17, 2006; Shirley, NY, USA; Flight TWA 800 10th Anniversary Memorial services at Smith Point County Park in Shirley. Throwing flowers into Ocean. On the beach close to where 230 people lost their lives, hundreds of relatives, friends and rescue workers gathered to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the disaster. Minutes after taking off from Kennedy Airport, TWA Flight 800 to Paris exploded in a fireball above the Atlantic Ocean off Long Island. Initially, investigators were not sure if the explosion was caused by a bomb, a missile or mechanical failure. Following an investigation that lasted four years, officials determined it was destroyed by a center fuel-tank explosion. Mandatory Credit: Photo by Gordon M. Grant/ZUMA Press.
