Illustration of spheres packed closely together. The Kepler conjecture is the assertion that an arrangement of spheres known as face centred cubic packing allows the greatest density of equally sized spheres in a given space. The conjecture was proposed by the German mathematician and astronomer Johannes Kepler (1571-1630) in 1611. The conjecture was proven by American mathematician Thomas Hales (born 1958) in 2017.
