Left posterior occipital skull fracture. Labelled artwork of two views of the skull in a case of a fracture of the left occipital bone. This bone is at the rear of the skull. At left is a left posterolateral view. At right is a superior view (from above) of a section through the skull, with the front of the skull at top. The hole at centre in that artwork is the foramen magnum at the base of the skull. The fracture runs upwards from the left mastoid process. Skull fractures are usually due to blunt force trauma and can cause internal bleeding and brain damage. Severe cases can be fatal.
