Levee protecting the town of Corcoran. Tulare Lake, located in California's Central Valley, has for decades been a dry lake, but has come back to life after major rains during the winter of 2023. The lake bed began being drained back in the 1890s for irrigation purposes, but now this phantom lake, which was once the largest freshwater lake west of the Mississippi, has flooded farms, crops, homes, and roads for miles around.
