Light micrograph of the bacteria Haemophilus influenzae (type b) taken from the sputum of a patient with a chest infection. The bacteria, occurring only as a parasite of man, has variously been known as Pfeiffer's bacillus & influenza bacillus. It was thought to be the cause of influenza until 1933 when the influenza virus was isolated. Many species are commensals in the upper respiratory tract of humans. Type b, a pathogenic strain, is of considerable medical importance causing bacterial meningitis in children & a serious & often fatal disease called epiglottitis. Magnification X 250 (at 35mm size).
