Light micrograph of the human epididymis, a highly convoluted duct, about 7 metres in length, which connects the testis to the vas deferens. The duct lumen contains a mass of sperm (red speckles), which are produced in the testis and pass into the epididymis to complete their development and await ejaculation. The duct is lined with columnar epi- thelium (pale blue cells with dark, elongated nuclei) bearing tufts of long microvilli known as stereocilia (fine blue hairs projecting out into the duct lumen). The stratified dark blue layers between adjacent sections of duct are smooth muscle. Magnification: x25 at 6x7cm size.
