A newly renovated house has been destroyed by fire in central London. Eight fire engines and 58 firefighters from the London Fire Service were called to a property on Hyde Park Gardens Mews in the Paddington area of central London. Station Manager John Ryan, who is at the scene, said: "It looks like the fire started in the basement. Crews are working very hard to bring the fire under control. We don't believe anyone is involved at this stage." According to a local resident, the property had been renovated over a period of 18 months and was completed in December 2013 although the owners had not yet moved in. He also believed the fire was started by the female owner using a gas heater who then alerted the fire department, this has not been independently verified and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. In a statement from the London Fire Service, “The basement, ground, and first floors were fully alight when the fire was at its most fierce and part of the floor between the first and ground floors collapsed. Firefighters are using an aerial ladder platform (like a cherry picker) to tackle the fire from above. The complex layout of the house means that deep seated pockets of fire are difficult to access, so crews are expected to remain at the scene into the night. Fortunately, there are no reports of injuries at this stage.”
