Windrush 75: Procession. Yesterday marked three quarters of a century since HMT Empire Windrush tied up at Tilbury docks. Locals pictured here in Herne Place prepare for Windrush 75 celebration procession towards Brixton’s Windrush Square. About 1, 000 passengers, mostly of Caribbean origin, disembarked to begin a new life in the UK. About half a million people made the same journey in the years up to 1970. At the 2021 census, around 1.1 million respondents reported some Caribbean heritage.
