The event was organised in solidarity with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who consider Australia Day, a day celebrating the colonisation of Australia, to be a day of mourning rather than a day of celebration. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will, instead, stage 'Invasion Day' and 'Survival Day' protests and commemorations across Australia.
