Lord Lionel Walter Rothschild (1868-1937), British zoologist, riding on the back of a giant tortoise. Rothschild, heir to a large fortune, founded his zoological museum in 1892, at Tring, Hertfordshire, UK. With tens of thousands to millions of specimens of birds, insects, mammals and other animals, it became the largest zoological collection ever assembled by a private individual. Rothschild bequeathed it to the Trustees of the British Museum, and it is now known as the Natural History Museum at Tring.
