Macrophage cells, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). The cell nuclei are blue. Mitochondria (dark pink ovals) in the cytoplasm produce energy for the cell. Lysosomes (black) contain enzymes for digesting foreign particles. Macrophages are a type of large white blood cell that recognise foreign particles and phagocytose (engulf and digest) them. Magnification: x150 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
