March 6, 2023, Manila, Manila, The Philippines: Filipino Driver Francisco taking part in a strike rests on a hammock inside his jeepney, as he sees his jeepney home, in downtown Manila, amid the nationwide 7-day strike against the government’s transport modernisation programme which aims to replace old jeepneys. The diesel-powered jeepneys, evolved from US military jeeps, are often referred to as ''King of the Road'' in the Philippines, with many saying it is a showcase of the south East Asian country’s culture. The transport modernisation programme will have aging passenger jeepneys replaced by the ones with enhanced safety features and better carbon emission standards under a subsidy scheme. But opponents, including individual operators and drivers say they will not be able to afford the cost of replacement even with government aids and the program could eliminate the fundamental culture of the Philippines. Protests have erupted across the country. (Credit Image: © Daniel Ceng Shou-Yi/ZUMA Press Wire) EDITORIAL USAGE ONLY! Not for Commercial USAGE!
