Mar. 5, 2011 - Marshall County, MS, U.S. - May 7, 1986 - Walter Bell, Marshall County, Miss. deputy, and cousin of slain Sheriff Osborne Bell, has a bloodied shirt after the shooting but was not injured. The car belonged to the Sheriff, who was assisting his deputy in an arrest on Mississippi Highway 309. The pair were taking a man and woman into custody, apparently for suspicion of drug possession, when the Sheriff was shot by the male suspect, Bart Mease. Deputy Bell returned fire and hit Mease, who was not seriously injured. Mease was charged with capital murder and sentenced to death, but the conviction was overturned and a second trial resulted in life imprisonment with the possibility of parole.
