Floating through 10, 000 acres of canal, Farmers use their little boats to fetch water lilies. They break through the layer of water lilies on the surface of the water as they practice the traditional craft of picking water lilies by hand. They start working very early in the morning from 6 am in the canal and work till the afternoon. Every flower is carefully hand-picked, collected inside the farmers' little wooden boat, tied in bundles, and sold to markets. After working for an entire day, a farmer can pick around 80 to 120 bundles of water lilies. Each bundle comprises 10 water lilies and is sold for only 15 BDT (0.14 USD) in the retail market. Water lily Harvesting is a major source of income for more than 250 families in the area. The livelihood of some wetland farmers is based on water lily farming. The national flower of Bangladesh, Water Lily is also an edible vegetable. Known as ''Lal Shapla'' to the locals, Water Lily is a favorite dish on the menu for many in this South Asian country.
