Mary Augusta Ward, English novelist and social worker, c1890. Mary Ward (Mrs Humphry Ward) (1851-1920) was the granddaughter of Thomas Arnold of Rugby and niece of Matthew Arnold. Her best known work was Robert Elsmere, which created a sensation when published by advocating a Christianity founded on social concern instead of theology.
