Dr. Cornum was one of three survivors of the crash, she suffered gunshot wound, two broken arms, blown knee ligament and other injuries not as severe. She and the other two survivors were captured and subjected to abuse by the Iraqi Forces. Dr. Cornum was repatriated March 6, 1991.
