February 17, 2019 - Medellin, Antioquia, Colombia - The Monaco Building was the place where the Cali drug cartel attempted to kill to Pablo Escobar in 1988 with 80kg of dynamite placed in a car bomb. ..25 years after the death of Pablo Escobar, the Medellín Mayor’s office and the community agreed to demolish the Monaco building and build a memorial park for the victims of Escobar's war. The building was built as a luxury bunker by the capo, to keep himself and his family safe, and as the Medellín cartel's headquarters. ..The Monaco building become a problem for the city, the Santa Maria de los Angeles neighbourhood, and the community because since the building was erected, at least six bombs were set off in the area. More recently the building has been promoted as an tourist attraction and many tourists booked for the “narco tours” to visit the Escobar properties, including the Monaco building. This kind of tourism is seen by the community and the authorities as glamourising Pablo Escobar’s image, leaving the victims of the Medellín drug cartel aside. ..The Monaco building demolition will take place on 22nd February, 2019. After the demolition the space will be transformed into a Memorial park called “Inflexion” with approximately 5000m2 and will be finished on November 2019.
