April 15, 2022, Medyka, Poland: Pictured here lighting Yahrzeit candles — an apt symbol of mourning with so many Ukrainians dying in Russia’s war, and the Jews of the past who were similarly executed, from Pharaoh to Hitler, is Tod Elan, a Jewish business man from the USA/Israel, who had his Russian assets frozen at the start of the war. He responded by coming to the Medyka border camp and volunteering to help the Ukrainians. Tod is helping prepare the Passover Seder table, where an international group of Jews from Israel and Ukraine, along with Chinese, Scottish, Polish and others, celebrated a very special Passover at the Medyka Ukrainian Refugee Border Camp, an emergent humanitarian hub on the Polish side of the border between Poland and Ukraine, not far from Lviv. It was hosted by the Chinese volunteers in the “New Federal State of China” tent, and run by the Lev Echad, (“One Heart” in English) staff and volunteers from Israel and elsewhere. Passover is a holiday celebrating the passing over from slavery and oppression into freedom: both the past and present came together here last night in a beautiful celebration meaningful to all.
