Muirkirk , East Ayrshire, Scotland, UK. It is located on the north bank of the River Ayr, between Cumnock and Glenbuck on the A70.. The discovery of coal in the 18th century led to the expansion of a rather mediocre fermtoun. The tar was extracted from the coal and became valued for coating ships. Another development was the invention of Macadam by the town's most famous son. The closure of the mines left little employment. Statue & memorial to miners who lost their lives in the mines
