The granite outcrops that give rise to the needle/pinnacle rock formations in Custer State Park, South Dakota, as some of the oldest rocks in North America. They date bck over 2 billion years. Granite is a very hard and resistant rock. the formations have remained despite erosion to surrounding softer rocks. The Needles Highway was opened in 1922 and remains popular with tourists and visitors to this day. The highway was very expensive to build and became known as the "Needless Highway" by the local population.
