A goiter is an enlargement of the thyroid gland. There are different kinds of goiters. Colloid nodular goiter is thyroid gland enlargement that is usually caused by too little iodine in the diet. Toxic nodular goiter involves an enlarged thyroid gland that contains a small rounded mass or masses called nodules, which produce too much thyroid hormone (thyrotoxicosis).
