Bush attends 52nd Annual Red Mass at St. Matthews Cathedral. Red Mass is a tradition that is held the Sunday prior to the Supreme Court’s opening session. The service gives special prayers for the court and the judges as they start hearing this session’s cases. This mass is special in that the new Chief Justice, John G. Roberts, Jr. was in attendance along with his wife Jane. First lady Laura Bush was in attendance as well as United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card. Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, Archbishop of Washington, presides over mass and then walked out of the church at the end of the ceremony and stood on the steps next to President Bush and Chief Justice John Roberts.
